Torcello: The Third Island on Murano & Burano Tours

Torcello was the lagoon’s first city and is now its emptiest island. Adding it to a half-day costs you roughly forty minutes off each of the other two stops. This page works out whether that trade is worth making, and which departures actually land there.

The island that was Venice before Venice

Settlement on Torcello began around the fifth century, as people moved out of the mainland towns into the lagoon. For several hundred years it was the dominant place in the lagoon, with a bishop, a harbour and a population in the thousands.

Then the channels silted, the marsh bred malaria, and trade shifted to the Rialto. The island emptied. Today a few dozen people live there, and the buildings that survive are the religious ones, standing in open grass where a city used to be. That emptiness is the reason a murano burano torcello tour feels like three different days.

Santa Maria Assunta and its mosaics

The cathedral was founded in 639 and holds the oldest mosaics in the lagoon. Two are worth crossing the water for. The west wall carries a full-height Last Judgement, read from the top down, with the saved and the damned sorted across registers. The apse holds a gold-ground Madonna, standing alone against a plain gold field.

Entry to the cathedral is charged separately and is not included in any tour fare. One operator prices it at €5 and states plainly that it is extra.

Attila’s Throne and the Devil’s Bridge

A stone seat stands in the grass outside the cathedral, known locally as Attila’s Throne. The name is a local one rather than a historical claim — it was more likely the seat of the island’s magistrate or bishop.

The Ponte del Diavolo crosses the main canal without parapets, one of the last lagoon bridges left in that form. It is a short walk from the landing and takes about a minute to photograph.

What the third island costs you in island time

Here is the arithmetic, because it is the whole decision. A two-island departure gives about ninety minutes on Murano and ninety on Burano. Add Torcello and the same boat window splits three ways: roughly fifty minutes each.

Fifty minutes on Burano is the main canal and the walk back. Fifty minutes on Torcello is the cathedral or the bridge, not both at any pace you would enjoy. If you want to sit in Santa Maria Assunta and look up, take a private boat or a six-hour departure rather than a three-island half-day.

✅ Useful tip — if Torcello is the reason you are booking, confirm the option you have selected at checkout. Several listings sell two- and three-island versions under one title, and travellers have arrived expecting the third stop and not got it.

Going independently

Torcello is reached from Burano, not directly from Venice. A short public hop connects the two, and the walk from the landing to the cathedral takes about ten minutes along a single path beside the canal.

Doing it on public boats is entirely possible and takes most of a day once you add Murano. That is the trade: the fare is lower and the hours are longer.

What there is to eat

Torcello has a handful of places and they fill at lunch. There is no shop worth the name and no bank. Bring water, particularly in summer, because the walk from the landing is open and unshaded the whole way.

Where to go next

The furnace island is covered on Murano glass and the painted one on Burano lace. Boats, seasons and the access fee are on visiting the islands, and the two islands or three guide walks through the same decision with the timings laid out. Murano & Burano Islands Tours lists every departure.
